The early days: flared cords, cheesecloth shirts, The Carpenters and my Praktica MTL 3...
...and Sammy the cat in another classic shot of ‘Cat in Flowerbed‘.
Before taking up photography professionally I was a dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet having trained at the Arts Educational School and the Royal Ballet Upper School. Joining the then Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet in 1988 I transferred from London to Birmingham in 1990 when the company became the Birmingham Royal Ballet. During my fifteen years with BRB I toured the UK and abroad extensively and was promoted to First Soloist in 1999.
Throughout my years of training and dancing photography remained a constant. After relocating to Birmingham the spare room was converted into a darkroom for black & white print development. My trusty Praktica was replaced with a Minolta X−300 which in turn eventually made way for a Canon EOS 100 and my first taste of fast prime lenses.
By the time I left BRB after many happy years of dancing digital photography was beginning to approach the quality of 35mm film−based systems and with the help of Dancers Career Development I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to take my interest in photography further.
Dance and Theatre Photography continues to be the ideal career for me by fulfilling my love of photography, satisfying my need for creativity whilst utilising my experience and knowledge of dance and theatre.
